If you’ve decided to sell your caravan, motorhome or campervan, the next question is where. In the UK there are five main options, and each one trades off price, speed and hassle differently.

This guide compares them so you can pick the one that suits you.

The five main ways to sell a caravan

Option Price Speed Effort and risk
Online adverts and apps Can be highest Weeks to months High: photos, adverts, viewings, payment risk
Dealer part-exchange Usually lowest Quick Low, but only if you’re buying from them
Sale or return at a dealer Good, minus commission Weeks to months Low, but you wait to be paid
Auctions Unpredictable Fairly quick Medium: fees, and no guaranteed price
Caravan buyer Fair trade price Usually days Low: valued from photos, collected for free

1. Online adverts and apps

Most private caravan sales happen on general vehicle and classified websites and their apps, such as Autotrader, eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace. There isn’t one caravan-only app that everyone uses.

Pros: you set the price, and a well-presented caravan advertised in spring can sell for more than any trade offer.

Cons: you need good photos and a detailed advert, you’ll answer the same questions many times, and you’ll have strangers viewing at your home. Payment scams are common. Read our guide to avoiding caravan selling scams before you list.

2. Part-exchange at a dealer

If you’re buying another caravan or motorhome, the dealer may take yours in part-exchange.

Pros: quick and simple, with one transaction.

Cons: only works if you’re buying from that dealer, and part-exchange values are usually the lowest of all the options. It can be hard to tell how much you’re really getting for your old caravan.

3. Sale or return

Some dealers will display your caravan on their forecourt and sell it for you, taking a commission or a fee when it sells.

Pros: less effort than a private sale, and buyers may trust a dealer more.

Cons: you don’t get paid until it sells, which can take weeks or months, and the commission comes out of your price.

4. Auctions

Vehicle auctions sometimes sell caravans and motorhomes.

Pros: a sale on a fixed day.

Cons: seller fees, transport to the auction, and no guarantee of the price on the day.

5. Selling to a caravan buyer

A caravan buyer, like us, buys caravans directly from owners. You send details and photos, get an offer, and if you accept, the buyer collects and pays you.

Pros: usually the quickest and easiest option. No adverts, no viewings, no payment risk, and damp or damaged caravans are bought as seen.

Cons: you’ll get a trade price rather than the top retail price. See trade price vs retail price for why.

Which option is best for you?

  • You want the highest price and have time: advertise privately in spring.
  • You’re buying another caravan: compare the part-exchange offer with what a buyer would pay you.
  • You want it sold quickly and safely: sell to a caravan buyer.
  • Your caravan has damp or damage: a buyer who buys as seen is usually the only easy option. See selling a damp caravan.

Selling a campervan or motorhome

The same options apply, with one difference: motorhomes and campervans are road vehicles, so private buyers will want a test drive and you’ll need the V5C logbook. Many owners find selling to a buyer easier for that reason. See sell my motorhome and sell my campervan.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to sell a caravan in the UK?

It depends on what matters most. For the highest possible price, a well-presented private advert in spring is usually best. For speed and ease, a caravan buyer who values from photos, collects for free and pays on the spot is usually the better choice.

Is there an app for selling caravans?

There is no single caravan-only app that most sellers use. Most private caravan sales happen on general vehicle and classified sites and their apps, such as Autotrader, eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace.

What is the easiest way to sell a campervan?

The easiest way is to sell to a buyer who will value it from photos and collect it. You avoid adverts, test drives and payment risks, and you can usually agree a price within a day.

Do caravan dealers buy caravans outright?

Some do, but many dealers prefer part-exchange against a caravan they are selling you, or sale or return, where they sell it for you and take a commission.
